[rec.music.gaffa] I Finally Got The Box Set!!!

Love-Hounds-request@GAFFA.MIT.EDU (11/22/90)

just as the header says--i finally got it! after waiting 3 weeks for a local
store to get it in, i went somewhere else for it. (i should have known better
than to ask a chain to get it.) i went to rhymes records in new haven-they
asked $180 for it, a price which i was only too happy to pay. i also picked up
cathy's album (i had a recording of a recording of a recording...) and cathy's
album too (each were $10). they also had a few other bootlegs, the titles of
which i can't remember, as well as a picture interview disc, all reasonably
priced. and the next day, i bought a beautiful poster of her--the promo poster
for love and anger. it is almost all black, with a photo in the lower left
corner of her with the two dancers. it looks glorious on my bedroom wall
(although it covers nearly the entire room!)

what i want to know is--what is the song davy on _cathy's album too_? it
doesn't sound like the clip of davy which i have on tape.

i feel that anyone who hasn't bought the box set because they feel it is a rip
off is simply jealous because they dont have a place to buy it. it is
wonderful! the pictures alone are worth the price. the picture of kate in the
japanese clothes (where is that from? i hadn't seen it before) is one of the
most beautiful ones i have ever seen. looking through the
all-too-small-booklet, i am convinced that she is looking better now than she
ever did.

my copy of the box set came with lyrics (except for the extra songs). all 6
albums included lyrics, a fact which made me happy, because my earlier cd's,
being cheap american versions, were lyricless.

if you haven't gotten a copy of it yet, do it! it is the best thing that has
happened to me in a very long time. especially if you (like me) are jealous of
all these accounts of the konvention, you should get it. it will cheer you up,
and give you the feeling that you have 'met' her too. tww is, above all, an
expression of kate through her music.

Give me a break. I can buy it if I want, but I don't want. $200 for
some photos is NOT my idea of value for money. If I had detected even
the barest hint of a creative artistic impulse in the construction of
the Box Set I would've bought it by now. One needs only look at the
Rykodisc David Bowie Sound + Vision set. Now THAT was exemplary
presentation: three discs FULL of rare and interesting material, in a
cool box with a BIG booklet of information and pics and a CDV to boot!
Why couldn't they just construct a special tray for the KT CDs and
include the FULL SIZE picture book that they used for the LP box set,
eh? Even if they had only gone that far and left the contents of the
rarities CDs the same, I might've been more inclined to buying it. As
it stands, I'll wait til I can convince my Canadian friend to get it
for me at the better-but-still-outrageous price of $130.

My cheap american CDs all have full lyrics. Granted, the TKI booklet
is kind of cheesy, using just two panels to reproduce all the lyrics
(thus occasioning much squinting), but otherwise I'm set in that regard.

I think the Box Set is a good idea done very badly. I've got all the
songs in it already. I've got the words. I don't have the photos,
but they are not worth it on their own (Kate is a musician, not a
fashion model!). Hopefully they'll decide to sell the rarities discs
on their own, maybe as a double album or something. *That* would be
worth the money.

What would've been REALLY nice: total remixing using Q-Sound, with the
B-sides from each album tacked onto the end. I wouldn't mind paying
through the nose for a cleaned-up, remixed version of "The Kick
Inside." Oh, but that would've taken REAL effort... rats...

I can agree that the Box Set is a great thing to get. Now, my only
problem is that my paycheck is less than the price of the box set!!! And I
have rent, tuition, caffeinated beverages, ad nauseum that takes that up...
Trust me, if I had the money, I would be knee deep in Her Work!
More thanks to KonvenTion folKs for the summaries!!!
Where I work, we have a sound that goes off on our NeXT machine that
tells us to take a count of the people in the room. Now the folks here can
witness the end-of-Love And Anger/beginning-of-The Fog KaTe laugh every hour
on the half hour! But it keeps reminding me of how much I wish I had been
at the KonvenTion!!!
I think "She really isn't..." sounds too negative. I can see why it's a
complement, but it just has the wrong feeling...
Everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving! And thanks for being fellow KaTe
fans, all of you!

     She really is!!!

i kinda have to agree with Jon's "gimme a break" sentiments.... i bought
the boxed set because i didn't have any of her albums on CD, but it was
obvious from the moment that i opened it up that it took all of an hour
at most to come up with the designs, etc. 12 stickers all basically looking
the same and VERY bland, one booklet that is well done, but it's so
small and then throw together all the discs. it was expensive, but i
went for it for the afrementioned reason and i am not displeased with
it, i am only disappointed that the presentation is as it is. from all
that i've read here i've always had the feeling that Kate is one who
demands quality from the littlest detail up.

in any case, i don't know how true this is, but the new ish of Tower's
PULSE! mag. claims that for those not needing the previously existing
albums in the boxed set, Columbia will most likely sell the two TWW
bsides discs separately "after the fanatic collector's rush for xmas."
which sounds like a good deal to me.

Why thanks, Dan.

This is the best news I've heard all day (well, second best, but I'm
not telling...)

Anybody got Columbia's customer responses address handy? I'd write
them a letter saying that I wholeheartedly support this idea.

If there's a human being alive on the planet who could survive a QSound'ed
remix of "Waking The Witch", I'll eat a bug. Nice idea though, Jon . . .

        Columbia Records
        666 Fifth Ave, P.O. Box 4455
        New York, NY 10101-4455

If it's for real, it's the best news I've heard all *month*. It does
make sense though . . . the US market probably wouldn't have any idea
what to do with the Boxed Set as it was released in the UK, but a
two-disc collection of rarities would probably fly quite nicely.

I'll get the cockroaches and the A-1 sauce for you. Not only could I
SURVIVE such an ordeal, but I would probably become instantly addicted
to it, such that my life would consist of sitting in front of the
speakers, with the CD player on auto-repeat while basic nutrients are
piped into my blood vessels via an IV.

Thanks for the CBS address. It is duly noted. I will be firing up
the word processor shortly. I urge all love-hounds to do the same.
