Is anyone out there in net land having problems with SYTEK 20/222 reliability? I have had five of these babies go out on me in the past three months. This might not be unusual for units purchased at about the same time, but we installed our supermuxes in July of THIS year and I think they oughtn't be failing so soon, at least not so close together. Five of the twenty-four boards we have is really LOUSY if this is indicative of the reliability we can expect. SYTEK has been pretty helpful, and they are checking on it at the production end. My real question is: Is my problem with these strictly local, or have other people been experiencing similar problems? Is there anyone out there with a big enough installation to be doing a study of the reliability of these units independant of SYTEK? I'd sure appreciate some input... We've had higher than normal failure rates on the S-muxen, too. Of course, with the 20/100's and 20/200's, "normal" meant one or two out of 75 or so, and most of them were un-seated boards from shipment. We have also noticed operational problems with the S-mux. Whenever we'd use one for people ports (human at a 20/100 calling the S-Mux) the charcter echo got real fragmented like there were some contention problems. So we put the S-muxen on the outgoing (wrt computer) ports for the lineprinter system and uucp where the problem is not noticeable. Then we noticed a bit of DTR/DCD problems; at times sessions would close just as they were opening. We have not investigated further; nor have we bought any more S-muxen. I might also add that we have not pursued it with the Sytek people either. Other problems have been taken care of promptly. Randy King AT&T-CP@MG ihnp4!mgweed!rjk

In reply to the questions on Sytek 20/222 reliability problems from Leo Wilson (...uf-csv!leo) Yes, there are others that are unhappy with the Sytek 20/222 reliability. And, yes, there is an independent study being conducted right now! In fact, we are looking for opinions on all of their products, not just the S-mux. The Sytek Network Users Group (SNUG) coordinates the gathering of this type of information.
