I am making a series of tapes consisting entirely of my favorite female singers. Of course KaTe has dominated each tape so far (I've made four), having at least four songs on each, but the mood that I am trying to achieve on the fifth doesn't really fit her as much. The question is, does anybody have a female singer who is a favorite that I might not have heard? I much prefer female singers to male -- the differences in vocalization and expressiveness, and all that. The following is a list of all singers and groups that I know and love, done from memory so that I'm not sure that it's complete. If anyone sees an obvious hole, let me know. Blondie Book of Love KaTe Danielle Dax Eurythmics Fleetwood Mac Aretha Franklin Ofra Haza Heart Sara Hickman Alison Moyet New Bohemians the Pretenders Sade Siouxsie and the Banshees Angela Strehli the Sugarcubes Tahra 10,000 Maniacs Throwing Muses Claire Torrey T'Pau Akiko Yano Yaz Ones not on the list, and not by accident: Cowboy Junkies Basia the Sundays Wilson Phillips Mariah Carey Celine Dion Whitney Houston Sinead O'Conner Tracy Chapman Nancy Griffith Suzanne Vega Laurie Anderson anyone even vaguely Madonna-esque People I would like to know about: Blake Babies Middle- and Far-eastern singers Any and all help/advice would be appreciated. If anyone else likes this idea, I will e-mail them a list of the first four tapes (each one was crafted evoke a certain mood or series of emotions). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Daniel Welch | Tylczak's Probability Principle: | | Tandem Computers | "Random events tend to occur in groups." | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

what about The Primitives, The Darling Buds, or Love Club ? i also like The Graces, but this isn't universal. Sean Williams

Innocence Mission -- right up your alley, and well liked in general by all KaTe fans. Kirsty MacColl -- a difficult recommendation, but you'd probably like her. None of the "obvious commercialty" of the artists you list in your "reject" list, that's a plus. But she deals with so many different styles that it's hard to predict whether someone will like her. Still, she's beautifully produced by husband Steve Lillywhite, and you can't beat her great 6-part harmonies!

A friend to whom I pass Love-Hounds articles has this to say about female singers... | You might suggest for me that he give a listen to Maria McKee, former | lead singer for the group Lone Justice. The cd that has Breathe is | quite nice. Also, if he's so inclined k.d. lang's Absolute Torch and | Twang cd is very nice. If you really want something different, try Caterwaul. Very "crunchy" (as Drukman would say) with unusual vocals. Caterwaul is a good description. _Portent Hue_ is excellant, _Pin and Web_ is pretty good. I'm told their earlier efforts don't measure up. Tanita Tikaram writes superb words and music but has a vocal talent somewhere just shy of Warren Zevon. Still, she works hard at it and I enjoy her work a lot. "Don't drive too slowly." How about the rather obscure but excellent Irish band In Tua Nua, or the band Crash Vegas. Another fine female artist is Sara Hickman - kinda southern u.s folkish. Someone mentioned the Primitives, they are good, but are slightly commercial. Oh I almost forgot to mention Brenda Dunn - also Folkish, quite good. anyone know of any good record stores in ottawa where i might find the box set?? Kirstin "Harg"ie hargieka@clutx.clarkson.edu

It's a pity Joni Mitchell herself seems forgotten. She have really had a profound impact on many of the later singers, female as well as male. But then she probably have been more famous for her lyrics than her music. To mention a few others, Jennifer Varnes Emmylou Harris (!!) Maire Brennan (of Clannad) Linda Ronstadt (well, to some extent) --Harald E
