Re: DEC DELNI's (Ethernet in a box)
***********************************

I requested information on the use of the DELNI with boards made by
other manufacturers. I had replies from the following and my thanks
to them.

Here is a summary of peoples experience with the DELNI.

***********

We have an Interlan board connected to a DELNI and havn'e noticed
any problems with it.

3Com's EtherLink board for the IBM PC works with the DELNI.
WARNING: DELNIs can't be used to connect repeaters to the coax.

We have a Delni box. It works great. We have two vax's (11/750 & 11/780)
connected to three 68000 Integrated Solution Q-bus Unix systems. Everybody
runs 4.2BSD and nothing wierd has every happened.

Don't hesitate to mail me any questions/comments.

We have several dozen 3COM interfaces attached to DELNIs, which are themselves
attached through 3COM transceivers to our backbone Ethernet. Everything seems
to work perfectly.

People say that 3COM transceivers adhere to the old spec and so won't work
with some new interfaces, but we certainly didn't have that problem. 3COM
transceivers have connectors on them, which makes them smaller and more
reliable than the Interlan or DEC vampire taps.

I've successfully used 3Com boards with a DELNI; I've been told, though,
that Interlan boards don't work with it.

CERN has connected Interlan (NM10 type), 3COM (IBM PC), PERQ, ICL Monitor,
Bridge CS1, and CMC devices (as well as DEUNA's), via the DELNI box.
We found troubles only with the PERQ; this complained of collisions in the case
of standalone DELNI connections, but was OK once the DELNI was connected
to a real Ethernet cable. Presumably a timing problem? Reported to ICL anyway.
We used a mixture of DEC, Interlan, 3COM and Sension transceivers.
       Kind regards,
Ben Segal, Soren Olofsson / CERN-DD.

Hope this is of use to those contemplating buying this device.
