[rec.music.gaffa] She smokes? Really?

rabin@dorsai.COM (Robert Marks) (03/13/91)

Some time ago, a friend and fellow peruser of rec.music.gaffa
informed me that the Great Kate smokes, two packs a day to be
specific. This surprised me greatly (she's a singer, eh?). Can
anyone confirm or deny this allegation?

Yep, she smokes like a chimney. Well, as of last report, anyway.
The "goddess" is distressingly human when you get right down to the
brass tacks. Some folks even get disturbed when the subject comes up.
It is, after all, her life. Still, you hate to see such a gift abused
with cigarettes.

If you listen to the music and doubt that her smoking is having any
affect, don't. It's much easier to handle the degradations of smoking
in a studio where breath control is less of an issue. On stage may be
a different matter. In fact, in preparing for a tour, especially one
that includes dance, Kate may come to realize that after smoking for
fifteen years (or so) she can't handle the same things she could when
she had been smoking for only four (or so). Perhaps this will finally
move her to quite once and for all. I sure hope so.

Yes, there are instances of singers smoking for years with no affect
on their singing. Just pray that Kate is one of those.
