[rec.music.gaffa] New PETER GABRIEL concert video, Point of View

jdliss@amherst.bitnet (03/08/91)

All Gabriel fans should report for surgery to expand the skull to make room for
the brain's sudden growth upon seeing the new video, _Point of View_.

It's basically a concert video, sometimes intercut and or partially overlaid by
either thematically relevant film or behind-the-scenes type stuff. The spirit
of the performance isn't obscured though (as in Yes' 9012live, which i think
is pretty heinous). The show is from the So tour (I think) in Athens. The
whole thing is really beautiful -- contrary to my fears, PG is only getter to
be a better performer as he gets older. He has some very specific ways of
trying to capture moods which I admire alot. Some very wild things happen with
the lights, though I won't commit any "spoilers".

The players: Manu Katche (drums), Tony Levin (bass and stick), David Rhodes
(guitar), and David Sancious (keyboards). The songs are: This is the Picture
(intro), San Jacinto, Shock the Monkey, Games Without Frontiers, No Self
Control, Mercy Street, Sledgehammer, Solsbury Hill, Lay Your Hands on Me, Don't
Give Up, In Your Eyes, Biko. It's 85 minutes long.

Defintely worth buying -- don't pay more than $20 ... I got mine for $16.50.
Anyone wishing to talk more about it can send me mail.

Jeff (jdliss@amherst)

PS - There's something wrong with my system, because the last post on my screen
is 5 March...?
PPS - Kate fans, yes PG can sing Kate's part in Don't Give Up.

	NO HE CAN'T!!!

whew... sorry, just listened to that song on repeat five times in a row...
one of those moods y'know. Anyway, my respect for PG is boundless, but no
way can that song be done without Kate. I heard it but my ears refused to
register it.

Oh and while we're on Gabriel, I bought Shaking the Tree just for "Here
Comes the Flood" remixed, but I actually like the version on _Exposure_
more. It was still worth the $13, though.

Haven't read news in a while, but I'm glad I did today, just to read
the recommendation for Happy Rhodes. The post gave the distribution
address as Albany -- I live here, does that mean this is a local thang?
As in, playing here?

and because I haven't said it today...the Dreaming is the best album EVER.
Nyah nyah. :-)

The going rate as far as I've seen it is $19.95. (Guess you got a deal 8) )

He's right. I wouldn't have believed it, but the song is still worthwhile...
Also, be a bit carefull if you buy it. Some of the copies sent out had
severe video problems and are unplayable. (The one I bought, however, was
fine. I've talked to others who've bought it, and most of them got good
copies, too I got the info about some of the copies being hosed from the clerk
at the store where I bought PoV. She was nice enough to put in one of the bad
tapes and show me what it's li. Believe me, it's unwatchable. The upshot
is, get the tape from somewhere that you're sure will let you exchange it
easily if it's hosed. I must agree with Jeff, the tape is in every way
outstanding. (Well, it would have been better if KaTe had come onstage...)

I cannot tell from your message info, but are you U.S. based. I hadn't heard
of it being released in the U.S., tho its been out in Britain almost as long
as Kate's album......
