[rec.music.gaffa] Lionheart

jeff@sqa.dsg.ti.COM (jeff abbott (TB02)) (03/22/91)

I have a terrible confession to make to Kate Bush fans:

I don't like one of her albums.

There, I said it. I'm free! :-). Seriously, I really enjoy _HoL_,
TKI, TWS, The Dreaming, and The Sensual World, but try as I
might, I haven't been able to like Lionheart. The music and
Kate's verbal acrobatics just leave me flat.

We've had some pseudo-flaming over what is Kate's best album;
what about her worst? Lionheart gets my vote, hands down.
Comments?

Later,
Jeff

But, but, but, ...

	Kashka!
	Oh England my Lionheart!

I think if I had to pick one which I would lose fewest body parts
before parting with it would have to be The Sensual World. But only
because it, unlike the others, has a couple of weak songs (Walk
Straight Down the Middle and Deeper Understanding).

But the very idea strikes me as horrific...

I shall have to play The Dreaming to recover.

What? These are two of my favorites! (Who am I kidding; all of KaTe's songs
are my favorites.) Seriously, you must at least be able to appreciate DU given
that you are using a computer to access this wealth of Kate sTuff! And, geez,
WSDTM is what gives The Sensual World sensuality! I thinK a re-evaluaTion is
in order...

Ok...I mentioned earlier that I didn't really like Lionheart. And it seems
a lot of other people on this list agree. But there are also a bunch who
strongly disagree. I'd like to hear from this latter group. What do you
like about LH? Maybe I should go back and listen to it again...What do
you suggest I listen to/pay attention to? Why do you like this album?
I mean...how can it possibly compare to TD and HoL?!

Humbly submitted,
David T.

"Oh England My Lionheart" is without a doubt my favorite song on this
album, and one of my favorite KaTe songs to boot. "Kashka From Baghdad"
is also great (it was in my .sig for a while), as well as "In Search of
Peter Pan," which I'd call a classic. "She tells me I'm too sensitive/She
makes me sad." <sigh>

>Why do you like this album?

Same reason I like *all* of KaTe's music: daring originality with incredible
music, vocals, and overall presence that I refuse to define (because I can't...
but She Really Is.)

>I mean...how can it possibly compare to TD and HoL?!

Most of the 200+ albums I own don't compare to TD or HoL. Does this mean
I shouldn't like them? I'm not allowed to listen to anything else? The
point is that _Lionheart_ doesn't *need* to compare to TD or HoL. It just
needs to be good. And if nothing else, you should be interested in it simply
as part of the artistic progression and maturing process that allowed KaTe
to realize her later projects.

And are you telling me that you really can't hear any glimmer of what
would later become _The Dreaming_ in songs like "Coffee Homeground"?

What do I like about Lionheart??????

Well I wouldn't trade Coffee Homeground for anything.....I love it!
It's humorous, delectably haughty and naughty, and when im in an
evil mood nothing compares. On other notes Oh England is a marvelous song
as is Hammer Horror and Kashka. Also In the Warm Room while being a
relatively simple song for KaTe at least is wonderful ( ok so I like
this song for sentimental reasons primarily but still!). Now that
I think about it there isn't one song on this album that I don't NOT
like.
I think (maybe??) that one reason that people may not appreciate this
album as much is because it is rather simple. But, in it's simplicity
there are slips and hitches that make this album good. Another thing
that people may find disturbing is that this album has a lot of raw
emotion. KaTe goes from a very powerful hatred, to the erotic, to the
humorous, and every other emotion in between.
Yes, TD and HOL are excellent no doubt, but Lionheart has it's own
postive qualities. How many other artists would write a song like
Kashka?

Actually I really like the fade out on WSDTM, but the rest does
nothing for me. I find the Sensuality in TSW in the title track and
The Fog.

As for DU, maybe it just reminds me of work too much (I work on speech
synthesis).

Quick question: Who is the "Cripen"(Crippen?) referred to in Coffee Homeground?

turney@cs.cornell.EDU (Jenn Turney) (03/28/91)

Rich Chandler asks:
Who is the "Cripen"(Crippen?) referred to in Coffee Homeground?

Well, while I can't give an answer with certainty, sitting here at my
terminal I discover a card catalog listing for a book entitled _The
Trial of Hawley Harvey Crippen_, from the series "Notable British
trials", along with the note "Dr. Crippen was tried in 1910, for the
murder of his wife, Cora Crippen." Must have been some fantastic
trial, as the book is over 200 pages long, with even a few pictures.
Perhaps he poisoned her!

Unfortunately, that's as far as I can get from here; this listing is
from the UC system catalog and I'm in New York. But it is a start,
and a rather promising one. Anyone care to follow up? It would
probably help further searchers to know that the name of the book's
editor is Filson Young. There are copies of the book at UCLA, UC
Irvine, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCSF, and Hastings.

"Have the walls got ears here?"
