Hi! I found a dealer in Tucson who has new CD copies of "Passing Through
Air" and "If You Could See Me Now" for $35 each. My questions are:

  (1) Are these "must-haves" for KaTe collectors?
  (2) Are these good quality recordings?
  (3) Is $35 a reasonable price?

I'm assuming these two CDs pretty much cover the Cathey Demos I've heard
people refer to. Please correct me if I'm wrong.....

               Thanks again-

                        judi

Yes.

Well, I can only speak about "If You Could See Me Fly" (I'm still waiting to
find a copy of the other), but no--the recording is wretched. The fact that
this is still a must-have really says something about the music, eh?

IYCSMF was mastered from the vinyl recordings (dunno if they did it from
the Cathy 7" or the Cathy's Album 12"), and so you have a CD that sounds like
a mediocre vinyl bootleg.

Maybe--I would guess it depends on your area. The only place I know of that
sells boots in Bloomington charges $29.99 for 'em (usually $49.99 for a double)
which seems to be an okay price. I seem to remember hearing that some people
got 'em for ~$25.

If I'd had a chance to get familliar with the songs before I bought the disc,
I'm sure I would have paid $35. _Playing Canasta_ is too good for words,
and a bunch of the other songs are stunning as well (the early versions of
"Kashka" and "Oh, To Be In Love"), "Eddie the Queen", "On The Rocks"
geez, all of 'em!

If you do buy the CD, I strongly recommend picking up IED's transcriptions
from the archives.

it's not *that* bad. certainly not "wretched". considering the quality
of the original recordings (KaTe probably did these demos to two-track),
they are as good as you might expect.

it was mastered from the _cathy's album_ lp (you can tell as the error in
pressing of the lp in the song "kashka of baghadad" appears on the cd as
well).

mediocre vinyl bootleg. sheesh. :)

whaddaya want? digital recordings from the mid 70s? :)

$35 in tucson ain't that bad. some of these discs were spotted on the
west coast for about ~$80 apiece (or so i was told). it runs about $25
here, which is a fair price after the cost for importing it from europe
is counted. $35 isn't too bad...

But on the other hand, no, not really. Just wanted to raise my hand
here and point out that there are still a few of us who are
uncomfortable with violating Kate's right to control her art and with
paying someone for something that they have no right to sell. We have
managed to get by without these sort of "must-haves" for some time now
and I imagine that we will continue to do so for some time to come.
