[net.lan] Who uses the ProNET ring ?

jc@riv05.UUCP (Jean-Claude Wippler) (02/08/85)

We are considering the installation of Proteon's 10MB token ring.
The boards will go into VAX 750's, PDP11/70's, and later possibly
also PDP11/73's, ALTOS 986's and IBM PC/AT's.

Is there anyone out there with arguments in favor / against this ?
Does anyone have information about reliability, performance, and
service ? There appear to be only a small number of sites at this
end of the ocean, and we cannot afford specialized network personnel
just to keep a LAN running.

We would be very grateful to receive any suggestions and comments
on this, and hope to reach the land of tokens, packets, and datagrams
without too many problems ...
				Yours truly,
						Jean-Claude Wippler

We use the Pronet. One of the major factors for us was the speed and
the ability to use fiber optics as a transmission medium. We just
installed it and use it. We've had no problems except one UNIBUS
board that was dead on arrival and cheerfully replaced by Proteon.
We're standing in line for the first of their 80mb boards now.

Our configuration here is about 9 vaxes an ibm 4341 and a couple of ibm
pc's all scattered around the building, which are on the local net. We
also have a research net ( Crystal project ) with about 25 vaxes, which
we are converting over to an 80MB token ring that proteon has
designed for us.

We have been running ProNET for almost two years. In the early
days we did have our problems, lots of errors, boards would quit working.
We were kept fairly busy tracking down problems and isolating bad boards.
We rewired all of the machines to use cables that we bought from Proteon
and after several ECO's the boards seem reliable. We have been running
for about 6 months with out any major problems.
