It was great to read Doug Burks Happy acolades. In short --- "what he said"! Now, Doug has brought up an interesting point: Happy's sleeve covers for her cassettes. You are right, Doug, these could be an impediment to the untrained eye. Point in fact: I was playing Happy's works to two friends (both happened to be female) and they rather enjoyed the music, but when I showed them the cassettes, one of them remarked rather poignantly: "gosh, mike, I would never buy something with a cover like that in a record store!" Well, that is unfortunate. I believe that this art work (by Happy herself) portray the spirits, demons, devils with which Happy felt herself contending during some *un*happy years of her life... many of these show up in her lyrics (the drears, the wretches, etc.). When these albums are finally released on CD, it will be interesting to see what the packaging turns out to be. -mjm

A couple of people (d and Mike) have been discussing the cover art to Happy's tapes. I'd like to throw in a few comments... First of all, I *love* these covers; my least favorite is Volume II (the silly (yet toothy!) grin on the "demon that lurks" just takes away too much ferocity. _Ecto_'s cover is probably the most accessible, and given the title of the album, it makes the most sense. The thing is that these covers *do* portray quite accurately the lyrical tenor of the music inside; as Mike points out, these *are* the wretches, the drears, the "demons that lurk." This is what Happy's rather unhappy music is about. It's about insanity, the cruelty, the injustices, the ironies of the the life she's led. One can listen to the voice and the music and be carried away from it all (in much the way Enya's music might do), or one can go the extra distance and integrate the music with the lyrics; I can't listen to Happy's work without getting chills, without being moved close to tears. And the covers, to my mind, captures this aspect of Happy's work. Choice of cover art and even band name is very important from a marketing stand point. I can understand why some might be turned off by the cover art of Happy's tapes. They certainly don't convey the style of music contained within. On the other hand, there are plenty of other bands with similar problems in one way or another. I remember the first time I saw _In My Tribe_ in a record store. I'd never heard of a band called "10,000 Maniacs" and I wasn't sure I wanted to...and I was appalled that a band with such a name would have covered Cat Steven's "Peace Train." Of course, we all know what the band is *really* like. Wouldn't Happy simply go through a similar sort of process? _In My Tribe_ has a rather innocuous cover, but a scary band name at the top; _Volume I_ might have a scary cover, but the name at the top is *very* friendly. So anyway, enough rambling. "'Till the dawn breaks..." Jeff -- |Jeffrey C. Yes, exactly what I thought....I opened up the package saw those hideous faces and said "Oh Cool." They are so right for the music..... It's funny but in a post that I sent that didn't get through I was going to mention the album covers....Im so glad someone did! Warpaint's cover is rather disappointing, but it's neat too, she's obviously making mime movements putting warpaint on her cheek with her fingers...at least we get to see what she looks like........... Doug writes about being in a Happy delirium....YES!!!! My friends just couldn't understand what I meant by this until they finally heard Happy! Happy is definitely like Vickie says: The Holy Ghost! In Kateness: Again calling all musicians....does anyone have any sheet music of Kate's that I could have a photocopy of????? Pleaassseee......*begging* :) Jeff Burka: Thanks again for the lyrics.....but where's Ecto?? Are there lyrics for that album yet? Or did they get lost?? Sorry to be a nuisance hehe!! Thoughts on Kate&Prince: If it's just producing a video it might be an interesting match. But, I wouldn't like to see her do any of his music like Sinead.....While it would be good to see her get the recognition she deserves, that's not the way to do it...... Whatever happened to that rumor about Kate playing Catherine in Wuthering Heights....???? Is the film actually going to be redone..any info??? enuf waxing...back to the books...3 down, 3 to go! YEAH! Apparently earlier this year Sinead O'Connor (!) was asked to play the role. She declined. The search for Cathy is/was definitely on. > "If they want me, I presume they'll ask me!" [Kate] said. That would be _very_ _nice_, wouldn't it! ++sja
