[rec.music.gaffa] Lyrics server

hoangdo@ntmtv.UUCP (Hoang Do) (02/24/90)

Does anyone here know the proper format for requesting lyrics
off of the Lyrics server at UMASS.EDU(not sure if this is exact)?
	I've tried several times
and it seems that without the correct "lingo" it will just reply
with an error code letter. I'm looking for the lyrics for HoL
and the Dreaming. Any help would be appreciated.
	Thanx

You know, I've tried as least five times to get the lyrics server to
work, and it hasn't worked once. Sometimes the mail bounces, but other
times I've simply gotten nothing back. Can someone who has used it
successfully PLEASE describe IN DETAIL how to set up a message that
the server will understand? Also, can someone tell me a mailing address
for the server that I am likely to be able to send mail to?

I seem to remember reading that the lyricserver has gone down...probably to
never reappear. Seems some record company(s?) found out that the copyrighted
lyrics to lots o' music were available and got annoyed. At least, that's
what I've heard.

I've used the server a bunch of times, and never had any problems...an
example might be:

LYRICS/ALBUM=NO BORDERS HERE

As you might suppose, this will get you the lyrics to all the songs on
the album "No Borders Here" by Jane Siberry.

This should be on its own line; there should be no subject. You can
put multiple requests in a single message, however the server does cut replies
at a certain length, so don't request too much at once.

On the header from one of the messages I got from the server, it lists
an address as "Lyrics%UMASS.BITNET@CUNYUM.CUNY.EDU"

As I've said, though, I think the lyricserver is down.

Jeff

Total codswallop. It works. It's alive. No record companies ever
found out about it or got annoyed (although they probably would have
some justification - on the other hand, now that the US KT CDs lack
lyric sheet, we are providing a very valuable service.)

I will request the KT album list and have it forwarded to Love-Hounds
as proof.

The formal address is lyrics@umass.bitnet although you may have to
route through some kind of Bitnet/Internet gateway - fortunately we
have some state of the art mail handling around here and
lyrics@umass.bitnet works just fine.

ha ha... i was waiting for someone to ask this. from what i've heard,
some record company heard about the lyrics server, perused it and found
a ton of stuff that no one was paying copyright royalties on (basically
the whole thing was illegal) and notified the rest of the record
companies affected who have effectively shut the thing down.

it was fun while it lasted though... --d

um, i recently remember seeing something about the lyrics server
being shutdown for business (temporary or not, i cannot say) due
to copyright problems (similar to those experienced in usenet for
transcribing articles, interviews the like).

This is completely false. As you will see, I requested the inventory of
Kate Bush albums available and the answer was returned to the list.
The lead singer of my amazing new band (SMEGABUCKS - live SUNDAY
OCTOBER 7 at GREEN STREET STATION, JAMAICA PLAIN - plug plug plug)
runs the thing, so I should know what's going on.

Hello friends,

does anybody know how to send *correct* requests to
lyrics@umass.bitnet server? I have not succeeded in doing so.

Thanks,

Greeting,
The subject of the lyrics server pops up at regular intervals in this
group, so I thought that the following post to another newsgroup might be
of interest. In short, it notes that the lyrics server is currently down
and appeals for volunteer programmers to help revive and improve it. [I
cleaned up the news headers to shorten it up a bit.]

This is a request for volunteers to work on a server project that
will be used by USENET. There used to be a sever at UMass affectionately
known as the lyrics server which was used to retrieve/contribute lyrics of
any kind. It has been down for some time now, and there is an effort
underway to revive it and also improve the performance and features it
will offer.

This project touches a lot of areas, like databases, C++, protocols,
and UNIX stuff. It would be good for a resume, or even if you want
something to do over the summer. The whole world would use this server
once it is complete (no joke!).

People interested should contact Niall Emmart at

   Niall.Emmart@saturn.ucc.umass.edu

All questions/suggestions/etc. should go directly to him. I'm just sort
of the facilitator/coordinator. You can still contribute to the design
specs. since I don't think actual coding has begun yet. Below is mail
I recieved from Niall which outlines the project.

  Thank you for your time,

  Doug

Note the desire to group music by categories. I wonder if they know what a
can of worms they could open there. For example, under which category would
they place Our KaTeness. Maybe 'Great' would be sufficient :-).
