[rec.music.gaffa] That Prince guy...

scott@cs.heriot-watt.ac.UK (Scott Telford) (05/16/91)

I read today on the news page of the "Beat Box" section of the
Oracle-C4 teletext service (teletext is a sort of non-interactive
bulletin board transmitted with each TV channel we have here) that two
directors have been signed up for Prince's new videos (Spike somebody and
somebody else) but that KaTe was "unconfirmed".

I really can't see why She would do it:

a) She doesn't need the money (I wouldn't have thought so anyway 8^)
b) It would delay the new album (oh no!)
c) It would delay The SeKond Koming (OH NO!)
d) I don't know if She would actually want to do someone else's vid. I mean,
Prince's style is just *so* different...

Gee, here's some really wacky thoughts:

a) Maybe "money" isn't the driving factor in her career,
b) Maybe there are other things she likes doing besides just cranking out
more new product to keep the rabid fangeeks happy, and
c) Maybe she -- unlike some people I could mention -- knows that there are
other talented people in the music industry besides herself, and would
enjoy working with them now and then.

I kill me, I really do!

Well, this being my first post to gaffa, having read it all year, and being
a big Prince fan as well, I'd like to make a quick comment (hope it doesn't
rattle your cage too much :u) :

Did it ever occur to any of you that Kate might actually *want* to do this?
She was asked to do it, and now she's mulling it over in her head, going,
"Hmmmm, this should be... well... *interesting*, anyway." I'm guessing she
probably won't do it, but if she does, hey, why not? Stranger things have
happened (cf. the photo of Axl Rose backstage at the Pet Shop Boys concert
in Rolling Stone). Prince credits Joni Mitchell as one of his big influences,
and he's done sessions with Bonnie Raitt (which unfortunately have not seen
the light of day), which is not to say that these artists are similar to Kate
(far from it), but that Prince does branch out quite a bit.

Personally, I get a big kick out of these weird pairings. I think "Time Zone"
by Afrika Bambaataa and John Lydon is one of the best songs of recent years. I
say, hey, if she wants to, then heck, go for it. Maybe there's something in
her personality you all aren't quite aware of yet. (Yeah, I doubt it too, but
you never know. :u) The thing I don't understand is why you all have any
reason to worry about it. (OK, the Sinead O'Connor thing, but do any of you
really believe Sinead is telling the *whole* truth?) I see Kate as a very
independent and interesting artist, and maybe she just wants to see what it
will be like. Maybe she doesn't. Time will tell...

Maybe Prince just wants to work with someone shorter than he is! :u)

Me too!

A whole new aspect of music can unfold if KaTe combines her naturally great
voice and instinct for rythm with Prince's funk. I'm not so sure about the
lyrical aspects of such a collaboration though...On the other hand both are
kind of sensual, but in a TOTALLY different way.

> Prince credits Joni Mitchell as one of his big influences,
And the songs that indicate this influence ('Sometimes it snows in April',
and 'The Ballad of Dorothy Parker' are two that come to mind) are really
excellent.
Who knows, maybe Prince is a secret love-hound, and can't wait to meet KaTe,
so he offered her a job! Maybe in his next tour he'll cover 'Leave it Open'.
Or maybe KaTe is a secret Prince fan, and in her next album she'll cover
'Mountains'...Or he'll be Heathcliff and she'll be Cathy in the musical
production of 'Wuthering Heights' :-) (OK, I'll stop now)

On a serious note, I am sure KaTe knows how to pick the people she works with.
AND she hasn't produced anything below her standards so far. She will most
probably NOT do a Sheena Easton-like thing, so there seems to be no reason
to get worried. Whatever she does will be a step ahead of its time.

Aieee! If I ever heard a jacked-up electrofunk Prince cover of "Leave It
Open" I'd roll over, die, and go straight to heaven. Deeeee-lishus!

There's so much noise, I can't hear the music! What orchestra IS this?

Maybe, but right now She's apparently in the middle of recording The
Next One, and we all know how She doesn't like to be distracted during
the creative process...

Maybe She would, but I don't think She's ever done a vid for someone
else before, and turning your own ideas and emotions into a video must
be very different to trying to do it for someone else, especially when
Prince's forms of imagery tend to be a bit different to Her's 8^)...I
mean, you wouldn't expect a Prince vid to look like "The Sensual World" video,
would you?
