[rec.music.gaffa] Happy news from Vickie

barger@aristotle.ils.nwu.EDU (Jorn Barger) (05/23/91)

Happy and Kevin send thanks to all Love-Hounds for all the support!

I just picked up the Warpaint CD from the Rose Records on Davis in
Evanston-- priced at $14.99.

Vickie says Kevin says the following stations have copies of Warpaint (so
call up and request something):

KCRW Santa Monica (playing "Waking Up" a lot during the morning)
WEQX Manchester Vt (played at least once on their new-music show)
KLAX Berkeley
WXTN Philadelphia
WDET Detroit
WBCO Boulder
KITS San Francisco
WXRT Chicago (312-777-8881) (their powers-that-be will be giving it a trial
listen in two weeks)

soon:
KIRA Dallas
KGSR Austin
B-Side Records, Madison WI

The Tower deal is temporarily on hold, at Happy's behest, for strategic
reasons.

Vickie expects the lyrics to meander across eventually, and warns that she
found a typo in "One Alien" on Vol. 2: 'you' should be 'your'. Make a note
if you plan to print out a copy.

Yes! Yes! I have thought that KGSR would be the perfect venue for
Happy. They play a lot of women artists, such as Joni Mitchell,
Indigo Girls, Sarah MacLachlan, Sinead, Annie Lennox, and what's
that other's name. . .Kate something :-)

The big names at KGSR are Jody Denberg and Kevin O'Connor. Kevin runs
the morning show and is programming director (I think); Jody is
probably the most knowledgeable and respected DJ in Austin, he's the
station's artistic director (I think) and he does the afternoon/early
evening show. (I'm only mentioning their names and such for Happy or
Kevin's benefit, so pass it on to them or Vickie if you can. Thanks!)

Can Happy and Kevin let us know when stations receive the CD, so we
can begin pestering them immediately? Also, since I don't yet have
the _Warpaint_ CD, can folks suggest a good tune off of it to
introduce people to Happy's music?

Jorn, if you have contact with Vickie or Happy, tell them they might want
to send a copy of the CD or tapes to another Austin station, KUT 90.5.
It's the public station here in Austin, and they have a morning show
called "Eclecticos" where they play everything from 11th Century
Gregorian chants to Broadway show tunes. In the past couple of months
they've played Kate's "Jig of Life", cuts from _The Dreaming_, and
some stuff from _TSW_ when it first came out. They'll give anything a try.

Their mailing address is:

KUT
Communications Building B
The University of Texas at Austin
Austin, TX 78712
(512) 471-1631 (business phone)

I know I could have mailed this to Jorn, rather than post, but I
want to encourage everyone to help out in this effort to get Happy
some well-deserved attention! If y'all can suggest other stations around
the country, please do.

Uhhhh, okay. I'm disappointed to hear that, hope that Happy's in Tower
very soon.

I have to agree, Austin is an IDEAL launching ground for Happy!

KGSR is rapidly becoming one of the most popular stations in town.
It started out as a tiny Jazz/New Age station until it came under
new management. Jody Denburg was one of the most respected DJ's
at another station, but decided to switch to the new KGSR. Since then,
KGSR has grown in music selection, and in taste. I hear KaTe all the
time on the station, along with many other great female vocalists.

I got excited when I saw that KGSR might be getting Happy's stuff. They
have a commitment to playing new music, and showcasing new artists.

It would be great if they could coincide her Austin debut by releasing
Warpaint at the Tower here.

KUT is a good suggestion, too, with a wide variety of programming and a
dedicated listening audience. Another possibility is KTSB, the
alternative cable radio station for The Univ. of Texas. They play
ANYTHING. I'm sure that if they could get their hands on any of Happy's
music, they'd play her, and to an audience that many other stations
could never reach.

Do it!

You might also try KDVS in Davis, CA. This is the station at the University
of California, Davis (obviously). :)
