We are putting in another Ethernet that will have mostly Intel 310s on them. As some of you may have heard, Intel has released (as of March 29th) its own version of the yet-to-be-standardized ISO protocols. (They are on the standards comm. and have stated that this will either be the final standard or they will update the Intel version to be the standard). The boards will be the Intel iSBC 552 Ethernet controller. The question is that these boards are the IEE 802.3 version and the Ethernet will require the use of a repeater. Among others, we are looking at the DEC local repeater. This happens to be a version 2.0. Will this repeater (and the associated H4000 trans) pass the IEE/ISO packets without problems? ..OR, does anyone know of ~$2K local repeater that will pass packets from 1.0,2.0,IEE without a problem. I asked the so-called expert from DEC, and he told me "I don't know, try it". No thanks. The majority of the use will be with the Intels, so a straight IEE repeater would be ok, but we would also like to use some other equipment that uses TCP/IP on version 1.0 and 2.0 controllers. I remember some bits and nibbles on what you can and can't do as far as crossing versions. Perhaps some wise kind sole can point out again what things will or will will not work in this issue of 1,2,802.. thanks, Stephen M.
