Some comments to the letter from Mr. Kwang Sung: -OSI is not 'connection-oriented' although the connection-oriented protocols are the ones mostly used. There is an addendum to the basic reference model (ISO7498) where it is stated that one can perfectly use a stack with only connectionless-mode protocols (although not all protocols have been accepted as international standards). -In ISODE you don't use TP4 over TCP but a small protocol equivalent to TP0 and providing ISO/OSI Transport Service. This means TCP is treated as a protocol providing a CONS (Connection-Oriented Network Service). -My own experience tells me application gateways is not a realistic solution to interoperability problems. -TCP/IP is widely used in European research centers and universities. OSI is interesting although it's efficiency problems must be taken seriously. You may love OSI, but the real issue here is whether OSI loves you. /Kim Laraqui, Swedish Telecom Radio
