[comp.protocols.iso.dev-environ] ISODE Steering Group

mrose@CHEETAH.CA.PSI.COM (Marshall Rose) (05/24/91)

I have transferred responsibility for the ISODE source tree to the care
of an ISODE Steering Group. This Steering Group is charged with
overseeing the continued development and maintenance of the ISODE, and
keeping the package openly available. The members of the Steering
Group, in alphabetic order, are:

	Steve Hardcastle-Kille, Computer Science,
                                University College London, GB

Julian Onions, X-Tel Services Ltd, GB

Colin Robbins, X-Tel Services Ltd, GB

	myself

Hugh Smith, Computer Science, Academic Departments,
                                Nottingham University, GB

Einar Stefferud, Network Management Associates, US

The Steering Group will probably be sending out a note shortly to
introduce itself. Those of you familiar with the history of the ISODE
will observe that all of these people have made substantive
contributions since the beginning of the ISODE project.

Under the supervision of the Steering Group, X-Tel Services Ltd is now
responsible for the ISODE source tree. The technical leads involved
with this have a great knowledge of the system than do I; however, I
will continue to provide support of the SNMP component.

In terms of administrivia:

1. The new bug address is

	bug-isode@xtel.co.uk

2. Any messages concerning ISODE that are addressed to mrose will be
summarily deleted prior to reading.

Thanks!

                           ISODE Consortium

The ISODE software has been in existence for a number of years. In
this time it has assumed major importance in the OSI arena. Up to now
the software has been maintained and developed on a best efforts basis
by Marshal Rose and a number of other people. However, the increasing
size of the ISODE community makes continuation of this style of
support impractical for the future. The using community requires a
higher level of support for the software and for the users.

Therefore, it is recognized that some kind of ISODE consortium should
be formed to deal with continuation and elevation of ISODE development
and support. To this end, we are looking for a few companies to
support an effort to found the ISODE Consortium with initial funding
to cover the costs.

We envisage the consortium having a number of levels of membership
from voting to non voting, with different levels of access to early
releases of ISODE. The founding member companies would obviously have
a special role in the ISODE consortium.

It is clearly intended that the consortium shall have an open
membership policy, shall be international in character and membership,
and shall keep the ISODE sources in their current "openly available"
distribution mode.

What else the consortium might do, beyond this, is for further study.

If you want to contribute to the founding of the ISODE consortium,
please contact Einar Stefferud <stef@isc.uci.edu>, who will coordinate
this effort for the ISODE Steering Group on behalf of the ISODE
Community.
