[comp.protocols.iso.dev-environ] ISODE Support

hugh@xtel.co.uk (Hugh Smith) (05/31/91)

ISODE Users,

You have all probably seen Marshall's announcement that he is handing over
ISODE source tree responsibility to a steering committee composed of Steve
Kille,Julian Onions, Colin Robbins, Marshal, myself and Einar Stefferud.
Furthermore that X-Tel is to handle management of the source tree.

This message is designed to allay any fears that people may have about a
commercial company (X-Tel) 'taking over' ISODE and its application services.

ISODE will continue to remain openly available. X-Tel has in fact
for the last year been undertaking, in conjunction with UCL, the
majority of the development work that will culminate shortly in
ISODE 7.0. This development effort will continue in the future.

We do not seek to privatize ISODE. X-Tel obtains its income from
clients who do not have the inclination or technical ability to
support ISODE and want commercial support.

We do undertake work for clients who require additional
capabilities adding to ISODE. However, we have usually succeeded
in getting permission to feed code back into the main source tree.
Supporting multiple slightly different versions of any product is
a hassle we try to reduce whenever possible!
