I haven't seen discussion on this lately,
You haven't been reading gnu.emacs.gnus and gnu.emacs.gnews.
I know that there are at least three news readers available for use
with emacs: gnews, gnus, and one recently named jnews or something
like that.
I don't recall hearing of jnews.
What do people prefer and what ftp sites have them?
You can get gnews and GNUS from tut.cis.ohio-state.edu.
I use GNUS, mainly because it was easier to get running a coupla years
ago. Now it seems to have a more active user community, and has been
updated at least twice since gnews was. Also, while both authors have
disappeared (GNUS' author temporarily twice, gnews' author unheard
from in a year or two) from the net, at least GNUS' author delegated
support responsibility to someone nearby.

Something that might influence your decision about whether to use GNUS, Gnews, Jnews or Rnews is that GNUS has been selected as the replacement for Rnews in the Emacs distribution. -- (setq mail '("tale@cs.rpi.edu" "tale@ai.mit.edu" "tale@rpitsmts.bitnet"))
