We (at RCA) are interested in networking several remote sites together. The machines involved will be a mixture of VAX/VMS systems and UNIX (and unix-like) workstations. We are currently planning on buying Wollongong software at each site to use over local ethernets, and connecting the seperate ethernets together using something connected to 56KB lines. The question is whether this makes sense in general, and specifically what to use to "connect" these seperate ethernets. As far as I know, there are three options: 1) Use exising VAXes with Wollongong software to do the TCP/IP routing themselves over the phone lines. 2) Use a dedicated TCP/IP gateway (Bridge Communications?) 3) Use an ethernet packet gateway (Vitalink?) Can anyone make a recommendation or alternate suggestion? What is the consensus about the performance/reliability of the Wollongong software? Thanks.
