[soc.feminism] The Times, they are a'Changin'....

kenm%maccs.McMaster.CA@uunet.uu.net (....Jose) (06/23/89)

When I hear various groups speaking of certain sexist
oppressions they face in our society, I'm often left thinking
that these people are a bit paranoid. But then I realize that I'm
hearing from people who grew up in a whole other era.

Perhaps many feminists don't realize that perhaps their goals
are closer to realization than they think.

I speak as a 21 year old student, sitting on the crest of a new
wave of a whole new generation that is sweeping into mainstream society.
I, and others my age, were brought up in the 70's, a time when feminism
was becoming such a visible movement (as early as grade 6, I had written
a school paper on feminism). The largest part of the feminist movement
is made up of people of a different generation; perhaps they don't
realize that we have been brought up being taught about the equality of
the sexes (and races and religions).

I think that as society matures (via the education of its
new generations), the goals that seem so far to the current generation
of feminists may prove to be much closer at hand.
