[soc.feminism] "What is the definition of a feminist"

carisab@ski-madness.wv.tek.COM (Carisa Bohus) (08/09/90)

Good Day,

There's been recent discussion about who/what a feminist is. I was
introduced to a good working definition.

If you answer yes to all three questions, you can consider yourself a feminist.
1. You believe that women have gotten the shaft for a long time.
2. You think this is wrong/unfair.
3. In some way (in your mind, your family, your community) you are making
changes to correct the unfair situation.

I make the additional stipulation to myself that only the person can answer
these questions. I may have my own opinion as to whether I think another
person is a feminist or not, but they name themselves, I don't.

Of course, I haven't evolved enough to find or devise a test of what _kind_
of feminist a person is. Radical, socialist, or ?

question: must one believe that men have not gotten the shaft for a
long time?
must one believe that women are currently getting the shaft?

The other two are easy, but the meaning of the first one is a bit difficult.
