The papers today reported that the judge in the latest surrogacy case has awarded the baby to the Calverts, who had contracted with Anna Johnson to bear a baby for them. Chrispina Calvert is unable to have children because of a hysterectomy. She produces healthy eggs, however, and the baby is a product of her egg and her husband's sperm. Anna Johnson has no genetic ties to the baby at all. The judge ruled that genetics is more important than gestation, and that surrogacy contracts are enforceable. Johnson doesn't even get visitation rights. -- -ed falk, sun microsystems sun!falk, falk@sun.com card-carrying ACLU member.
