[soc.feminism] Q/A: What is ROTC?

randy@ms.uky.EDU (Randy Appleton) (11/01/90)

I had an interesting experience I'd like to share with y'all. All
these quotations are actually paraphrases.

Here at the University of Kentucky, I went to the Office of the
Chancelor. I said, "If this University has a policy against gender
descrimination, and ROTC *does* discrinate on that basis, how are they
allowed on campus?"

He said, "uhhh, go ask the Vice-Chancleor for Legal Affairs"

I went to the Office of the Vice-Chancelor for Legal affairs. I said,
"If this University has a policy against gender descrimination, and
ROTC *does* discrinate on that basis, how are they allowed on campus?"

He said, "uhh, go ask the ROTC folks."

I went to the commander for the local ROTC here on campus. I said,
"If this University has a policy against gender descrimination, and
ROTC *does* discrinate on that basis, how are they allowed on campus?"

He said, "The University of Kentucky is a land-grant institution. The
Land Grant Act of 1917 says that all land grant schools *must* offer
ROTC. Therefore, ROTC *must* be allowed on campus." he went on to
talk about how the students debate this every year in Military Science
101, how the male has a "genetic, at birth instinct" to protect the
female, who after all gives birth, etc.

Anyway, that's why (on some campuses) ROTC is offered even though they
descriminate against women.

Also, I asked about descimination against gays. It turns out that the
University of Kentucky has no policy against discriminating aginst
gays.

ROTC stands for Reserve Officer's Training Corp.

I was in ROTC for the two years I went to college. I am now in the
Army Reserves. If an ROTC unit on your campus is not allowing women
to join, then they are breaking federal law. Not just the law of the
school.
