Our department is thinking of setting up a LAN using Starlan. We recently replaced our univiersity phone system and ended up with our building completely wired in duplicate with twisted pair. We would like to use the LAN for shared file access and electronic mail and don't anticipate that STARLAN's 1Mbit speed will be a drawback. Our main concern is that we want to be able to mix UNIX and MS-DOS machines. It looks as if both the PC-7300 (3B1?) with the Alloy Computer MS-DOS board and the PC-6300-plus might allow us to do this. Is it true that the 6300 cannot hook directly into a LAN running 7300's and 3B2's running UNIX? Would the PC-6300-plus be able to serve as a gateway between an MS-DOS STARLAN network and a UNIX STARLAN network. All of ATT's documentation seems to suggest that the MS-DOS network runs separately from the UNIX network. We currently have mostly MS-DOS machines, but want to migrate into a UNIX environment. We want the system's file server to be a UNIX machine, but we don't want to have to replace all of our current MS-DOS machines. Are there any STARLAN users our there that could tell me somehting about its performance. How easy is the network software to use? Would a PC-7300 with the new 35msec winchester make a decent temporary file server? Thanks in adavance for any help.
