We have Ethernets with both DecNet and TCP/IP here. At present they are two phyically separated networks but we will soon join them together. We are also purchasing a DACU box from IBM so we can connect our countless VM/CMS machines. Our main problem is to decide the best way to gateway TCP/IP to DecNet. Not all our DecNet machines are on the Ethernet, but are connected together by leased telephone lines. We are considering two solutions (but of course are even interested to here of others). 1. Put the Wollongong (or Spartacus) TCP/IP stuff on one of the VAX/VMS machines. 2. Since we are shortly to install another UNIX machine, we could put ULTRIX on it, and use it for both DECNET and TCP/IP. Both these solutions are, as far as we can see, workable. The real question is which gives the greater functionality (without too much hacking). What we want to do is to be able to tranfer files and mail between all our systems tranparently. Remote login would also be nice but not so essential. Would either of these solutions (above) enable us to FTP files directly from machines in the TCP/IP world to DECNET machines other than the gateway machine? Likewise would it be possible for us to copy files from DECNET machines other than the gateway to TCP/IP machines? The same applies for mail. Has anyone done this? How much work is involved? If I get enough responses I will of course summarise to the net. This cannot be a unique problem! {seismo, decvax}!mcvax!enea!erix!mike or mike@erix.UUCP
