[net.lan] compatibility of TCP/IP and Ungermann-Bass Hardware.

skl@kvvax4.UUCP (S|ren Lundsgaard) (10/16/85)

Background: We are running two Vaxes (780 and 785) with Ultrix 1.1,
and have two others running VMS 4.0 (incl the first 8600 in
Scandinavia)

These four machines run decnet on an ethernet, which work just fine.
Decnet. BFD.

On the same network we run Ungermann-Bass Niu's as terminal servers to
these machines, using all Ungermann-Bass hardware etc. This includes a
bridge to some broadband cables.

More information: the address of one of one of our deuna boards is
aa:0:4:0:9:3c and the address of the other is aa:0:4:0:4:3c.

We are sworn on not changing Ultrix as it is supplied by Digital.

Question: Is it possible that TCP/IP on the Ultrix Machines will mess
up the Ungermann-Bass hardware? Are the addresses listed above
reasonable.

Be sure you have the expertise to answer, because this is not an
obvious thing that requires an obvious answer like "of course not, you
dummy", or "well, if the type field is correct . ." Contact with or
response from someone who runs 4.2 TCP/IP on the same cable as
Ungermann-Bass hardware would be ideal.

I am certain that the answer lies in the addresses listed above, but I
do not have the capability to check their acceptibility. (Don't ask why.)
