[soc.religion.christian] Question/Shroud - Gender

btong@cipc1.dayton.ncr.com (Bonnie Tong) (06/15/89)

I am a new poster to this group, so please note that I do not
intentionally go against any rules/charters of the group.

I have been reading this group for about a month. I have seen many
articles that I have found interesting, but have been hesitant
to follow up. I have a few questions (Shroud of Turin) and a
comment ("inclusive language text").

Questions:

1.) I heard about a shroud that has the image of a man
that suffered death by crucifiction. Does anyone
in this group know of any passages in the scripture
to support (or not) the theory that this shroud is
        that of Jesus?
2.) Is there a more appropriate group to post to about
this topic? If so, how do I subscribe?

Comments:

In an article about "inclusive language text", by Ron Olshausen,
it is mentioned that the Methodists are adopting this practice.
Well, I am a member of the United Methodist church in my town
and I, too, have heard this. If it has been approved at the
bishop level, we have not yet adopted it. Quite frankly, it is
my hope that it is not adopted. I am a woman and have never
felt less than or greater than any man in God's eye. I am a
firm believer in equality for women, but I also like the bible
and its references to gender left alone. I believe that God
*is* the FATHER; Jesus, His SON. As for the Holy Ghost, well
I don't think there is a "gender" at all.

[This group is fine. The major alternatives are talk.religion.misc,
and the mailing list mailjc. You don't need to do anything to be
added to talk.religion.misc or this group. If your system is part of
Usenet, you can participate. In general if you can read the group you
can post to it, unless your system administrator has done something
odd. This group is moderated, in an attempt to cut down flamage. It
also tends to be more intra-Christian discussion, where
talk.religion.misc tends to be between Christians and non-Christians.
mailjc is moderated somewhat more tightly than this group. (The
moderator is mailjc-request@brillig.umd.edu or
...!umcp-cs!brillig!mailjc-request.) I believe senders must be
Christian, a restriction that would be inappropriate for a Usenet
group. Your first posting there must be prefixed by a brief statement
describing your faith journey. mailjc tends to be more oriented
towards Christian practice and this one towards doctrinal issues,
though I'd be happy to see any subject relevant to Christianity and I
believe the same is true for mailjc.

Probably someone will be able to give more info about the Shroud of
Turin. Tests using carbon dating were recently completed. I believe
they convinced almost everyone that it can't be authentic. But I
don't know any details.

Actually, mailjc is quartered at mailjc@grian.cps.altadena.ca,
complete with an appropriate -request address. The moderator married,
got a new job, and moved from Maryland to California.

In article <Jun.14.22.34.23.1989.3621@athos.rutgers.edu>
btong@cipc1.dayton.ncr.com asked about the Shroud of Turin.

The shroud of Turin was tested by numerous universities (international)
using C-14 tests with double-blinds. They uniformly found dates that
were but a few years before it was "found", over a thousand years too
late to be "the" burial shroud. The (insert local catholic religious
leader) of Turin made the announcement.
