The New English Bible, which I don't have handy, translates Genesis like this,
"In the beginning, when God began creating the heavens and the Earth, etc."
The verse always struck me as "in medias res." God always was, always is,
always will be, or, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. What went on before God began creating the heavens and the
earth is anyone's guess. Perhaps that's when he created the gods, that is, the
angels, including you-know-who. Perhaps that's when he implemented the laws of
physics. I dast study epistemology, which I define as the study or
investigation of the limits of human knowledge -- to attempt to know the mind
of God is surely to skirt the limits of human knowledge. Ah, to know the laws
of physics as well as God -- what a joy that would be!
