I am looking for a copy of the Bible for use on a UN*X machine. I would prefer a modern translation, such as NIV, but I'm flexible. I don't think I care about fancy search software, since I'm fairly handy with "grep" and friends. Do the MS-DOS packages I've heard about use straight ASCII files, or do they use some proprietary compression/indexing schemes? Unfortunately all the modern translations are copyright by some publisher. This means that one can't simply make them available publically. There is a copy of the KJV available on WSMR-Simtel20.Army.Mil, as part of the public domain software collection. You can get it via anonymous FTP. Other than that, I'm afraid you're going to have to contact publishers. The MS/DOS software all uses indexed files, as far as I know. In fact I think the publishers of the translations may insist on not making the text available in a straightforward format. --clh]
