I have lost track of this, but the majority are undoubtly alive
*today*.

Rate?  Unfortunately, the "exponential" answer probably doesn't fit
well anymore.  In some places (like U.S.), the average family size
is going down for various reasons which are interpreted as freedom.
In other places (like mainland China, the most populace country for
a while still), it is going down by the will of the state...
