Michael Lounsbery wrote me with the following, if anyone is interested: <Thank you Michael!!!> I finally found my Italian version of Francis' famous prayer. I got it in Assisi a few months ago, where I was visiting for a day or two. It's well worth a visit -- a beautiful, quiet town. In case no one else has sent it to you, here it is: PREGHIERA SEMPLICE Oh! I don't know if these were St. Francis' exact words. Italian has changed somewhat since the 13th century, and this may be a modern version. I can do a basic translation, but anything beyond this requires a better knowledge of Italian than I am capable of: SIMPLE PRAYER O Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: Where there is hatred, let me bring Love Where there is offense, let me bring Pardon Where there is discord, let me bring Union Where there is doubt, let me bring Faith Where there is error, let me bring Truth Where there is sadness, let me bring Joy Where there are shadows, let me bring Light O Master, let me not try so much: To be consoled as to console To be understood as to understand To be loved as to love SINCE Yes it is, that by Giving, that one recieves, By Pardoning that one is pardoned, By Dying that one relives in Eternal Life.
