[net.lan] DEUNA and INTERLAN on a DELNI

rochez@cernvax.UUCP (rochez) (01/15/86)

Our problem was : To connect through a DELNI four DEUNA (ethernet V2)
interfaces on VMS VAXES and two INTERLAN BD-NI 1010A
                  (ethernet V1) on UNIX VAXES.
The DELNI was attached to the yellow cable via a H4000

The symtom was : While DECNET was running correctly it was not possible
to access the UNIX machines from the VMS VAXES or
from any other machine on the yellow cable using TELNET .
With the DELNI in local mode, i.e. disconnected from
the yellow cable , TELNET was working perfectly between
                 the VMS and UNIX VAXES.

The replacement of the DELNI by an other FANOUT unit (ISOLAN product)
following the 802.3 specifications has gave the same problem
with the H4000 .

While not fully understanding the reason for this behaviour we
 found 2 solutions .

first : Inserting between the DELNI and the UNIX machines another
         DELNI solved all problems.

Second : Replacing the H4000 transceiver by another adhering
strictly to the IEEE 802.3 specifications made both types
of interfaces to work together on the same DELNI and
also with the whole network .

Remarks : This problem of compatibility is not dependent of the
collision signal . We disconnected all collisions
signals on every transceiver cable concerned and the
behaviour of the network was similar .

I assume there is a default with the H4000 and
I hope that ,one day ,some H4000 guru will explain
the reason of the problem raise by this type of transceiver .
