[soc.religion.christian] Howdy! & a beginning....

tobritt@mars.lerc.nasa.gov (Randall Britton (SVER)) (08/06/90)

Howdy all. I was skimming through all of the groups available
at this site when lo and behold... I find soc.religion.christian.
At last, I say to myself, a group where I can discuss ideas with
others in a meaningful format. What an excellent opportunity
to discuss thoughts on Christianity with a large group of others.
I would be remiss in my responsibilities if I failed to take
advantage of this. Actually, my first post of substance will
not be until tonight, but I couldn't pass this up without some
initial thoughts. Most of the messages in the reader have expired
at my site so I have very little feel for this group but let
me start by stating what my attitude is towards Christianity.

1) I accept that the Bible is God's message to man dealing with
how man is to conduct himself in this life.

2) The Bible is the inspired word of God.

3) As a christian, the only authority I have to do God's will
    is the Bible.

4) Following a man's doctrine, if contradictory to what the
    Bible says, is sin.

OK, I know what all of you are thinking. Thats what almost
everyone who claims to be a Christian says, right? You are
right, almost everyone(christian) calims to follow what the
Bible says, yet do not practice what they say. Do I have
some special innate ability to understand things about the
Bible that no one else does? No. The Bible is easily
understood by all. It was written for the carpenter, the
physicist, for all men regardless of intellectual ability.
Do I, as a Christian have a monolpoly on truth? No. The
Bible has a monopoly on truth, not I. If you conform your
life to the pattern set down in the Bible(specifically the
New Testament) you will have truth. Is there more than one
truth? No. (I'll probably get some discussion on this)
Truth is truth. Two truths that disaggree with each other
cannot possibly both be truth. Well, this sums up my belief
on what man's attitude should be towards the Bible. My
future posts will contain what I understand the Bible to say
about Christianity. If you disagree, fine. Let's discuss
it shall we? But please, lets do it with the attitude of
the Bible being the final authority. Not what you "think", not
what I "think", but waht the Bible SAYS. I am a human, as are
you and am fallable. If you can, using the Bible, show me
where my beliefs are in error, then I will call you my friend
and be the first to admit that I am wrong. Next posting
(not counting replies to this) will be on
"The Church of which Paul was a member"

Until next time......

P.S. In reading my post I hope this didn't come off as
another obnoxious guy who thinks he knows everything
type of posting. I do not know everything. But I do
know that everything I NEED to know is contained in
      the understandable scriptures of God.

P.P.S. By the way, I meant no disrespect to carpenters
whatsoever. After all, some of the best people
        are/were carpenters....
