[soc.religion.christian] Names of Popes

carter@huey.css.gov (Sam Carter) (07/26/90)

In a recent discussion with some of my friends, I remarked that there
have been no popes named Peter other that Peter himself. None of us
knew why this to be true. Is there an edict against a pope selecting
the name Peter or is it just tradition that no one has or will select
that name?

Whoa. I was just thinking the same thing myself earlier this
evening. I know of no edict prohibiting the choice of that name,
I think it's largely tradition and a certain degree of
humbleness. It would be quite a challenge to live up to the name,
after all.

And living up to the name Paul or John *isn't* a challenge? :^)

Or both at the same time (i.e. John Paul)?

I refer my fellow hackers to St. Malachy's prophesy on
Peter II, which is 2 popes after this one - as well as the last
Roman Pontif (though I would argue not necessarily the last heir
to St. Peter, as Pope is a Roman word which does not apply if
Rome is destroyed as the prophesy seems to indicate.

Any other comments on the coming crisis? I am particularly
interested in hearing views on the prophesies of the great monarch.
