Ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 11.29. There is a rest which is given: "I will give you rest"; but there is rest also which has to be found. The first is obtained by simply coming to God and receiving His gift of life. This means something more than just believing in a well-preached evangelical gospel. It means coming as a weary, burdened sinner and making living personal contact with the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Such contact unfailingly brings rest. Thank God for all His children who possess this fundamental gift! But having come there, we find ourselves on the threshhold of something more. We are to learn of Him--to discover the deep satisfaction to be found in a growing knowledge of the Lord Himself. Above all, we are to learn His meekness and lowliness of heart. In doing so, He says, we shall find rest. For this rest is not a gift; it is for disciples, that is to say, learners. And learning takes time, but it is also infinitely rewarding. ----- Robert W.
