[soc.religion.christian] Atlantic article on seminary education

mark@hubcap.clemson.edu (Mark Smotherman) (12/14/90)

Have other people read the article on current seminary education
in the December 1990 Atlantic? I found it to be quite disturbing,
yet sometimes rather humorous, such as the part about students at
Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA, where a class was
taught to renounce racism, sexism, and "class"-ism -- including
oppressive acts such as passing both the salt and pepper when
someone asks for only one!

The article covers Catholic, Protestant, as well as Jewish
seminaries. I thought the problems at Catholic schools of
declining enrollments, homosexual pressures, and quality of
education were presented well. Being a Protestant I'm not able
to assess the accuracy on the Catholic issues. In terms of
the Protestant seminaries, I thought the author concentrated
too much on liberal schools, with only a passing mention of
spiritual maturity problems of young Christians attending
evangelical theology schools.
