[soc.religion.christian] Saint Jerome on men and women and sin

cms@gatech.edu (02/12/91)

Aliae sunt leges Caesarum, aliae Christi; aliud Papianianus, aliud
Paulus noster praecipit. Apud illos in viris pudicitiae frena
laxantur et solo stupro atque adulterio condemnato passim per
Iupanaria et ancillulas libido permittitur, quasi culpam dignitas
faciat, non voluptas. Apud nos, quod non licet feminis, aeque non
licet viris.

Caesar's laws are one thing, Christ's another; Papinian makes one
ruling, our Paul another. Among them, restraints on modesty are
loosned for me, only rape and adultery are condemned; casual lust is
permitted in brothels and with slave girls, as if sin were a matter of
the woman's status, not of sensuality. Among us, what is forbidden
women is equally forbidden men.

                                     Saint Jerome

Hmmm, I wonder if, from this quote, dear Jerome would prohibit men
from speaking in Church, teaching in Church, etc.....:-)

Yours in Christ,
