[soc.religion.christian] Baptism Texts - All of Them

davidbu@loowit.wr.tek.com (David E. Buxton) (02/08/91)

The topic of baptism has been a somewhat popular topic on s.r.c laterly.
A few months ago I wished I could easily look up all the texts. Now
that I have a computer based Bible its easy. This is for the
convenience of those who do not. Its all the bapti* texts my computer
could find. I only deleted the ones about John the Baptist being
be-headed. Otherwise, its all there, all of bapti* If you have other
word searches you would like me to do just send me email. Topics such
as Justification and Righteousness are good ones, for example.

the wrath to come?" -- Mat 3:7 ""I indeed baptize you with

My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for
those for whom it is prepared by My Father."" -- Mat 20:23
      (NKJ)

""The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from
men?" And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say,
'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe
him?' "But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the multitude, for all
count John as a prophet." "-- Mat 21:25,26 (NKJ) ""Go therefore

I am baptized with?" And they said to Him, "We can." And Jesus

      6:4 (NKJ)

baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none
of you except Crispus and Gaius, lest anyone should say that I
had baptized in my own name. Yes, I also baptized the household
of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any
other. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the
gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should
be made of no effect." -- 1 Cor 1:13-17 (NKJ)

"Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our
fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all
were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the
same spiritual food, "and all drank the same spiritual drink. For

the dead do not rise at all? Why then are they baptized for the
      dead?" -- 1 Cor 15:29 (NKJ)

"For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on
      Christ." -- Gal 3:27 (NKJ)

to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and

resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment." -- Heb 6:2
      (NKJ)

"who formerly were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of
God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared,
in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.
There is also an antitype which now saves us, namely baptism
(not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a
good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus
      Christ," -- 1 Pet 3:20,21 (NKJ)

I tried posting this before, but it didn't show up, so forgive me if it
is in here again......

I am looking for a GOOD computerized bible program for the IBM PC. I am
interested in a nice quick search interface (with multi-word searches) ,
Hebrew/Greek Concord. with Strongs word numbers, nice interface to
word processors, mouse support, multiple windows, maybe a memory resident
option....
Am I asking too much??

I also WANT New American Standard Version. I have not seen any that
have this (are there any?).

I have tried some 2 or 3 year old demo disks, but none seem to offer what
I want. Have they improved since then?

Please respond via e-mail to jmast@uicsl.csl.uiuc.edu

Thanks!

The listing of the baptism texts is probably incomplete given that the
Greek words translated as bapt- are also translated as wash- and dip-
elsewhere in the NT.

For example, from Strongs (KJV)

907 baptizo -- Mark 7:4 -- except they wash they eat not
Luke 11:38	-- he had not first washed before dinner

909 baptismos	-- Mark 7:4	-- received to hold as the washing of cups
Mark 7:8	-- of men as the washing of pots and cups
Heb. 9:10	-- in meats and drinks and divers washings

911 bapto	-- Luke 16:24	-- that he may dip the tip of his finger
John 13:26	-- give a sop when I have dipped it
Rev. 19:13	-- with a vesture dipped in blood

As for most who have a Reformed background, I find the equating of baptimos
in Heb. 9:10 with "sprinklings" is particularly significant.
