[soc.religion.christian] WHAT IS SIN?

lshaw@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu (logan shaw) (03/01/91)

Rey Paulo, rvp@softserver.canberra.edu.au, asks in article
<Feb.25.08.43.18.1991.1123@athos.rutgers.edu> "WHAT IS SIN?".

Well, I'd like to throw in that I think no definition of sin is
complete without this verse:

"Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do, and does not do it,
to him it is sin." (James 4:17)

Too often we think we can get away without doing God's will. Sometimes we
put it off til later. Sometimes we think of it as an option that God gives
us if we really want. The truth is that it's sin _not_ to serve God. Trust
me -- this is something that I've learned from personal experience. And,
I think it's something that alot of us are guilty of.

Hope ya'll find this helpful...

1 John 3.4b:

"for sin is the transgression of the law."

This reduces the question to "What law?"

The term "law" is decomposed to:

        1: moral law
        2: civil law
        3: ceremonial law

It is generally believed that (2) and (3) have been removed by the cross.
This leaves (1). What is (1)? A good start is the 10 commandments. Matthew
5 adds more light.
