[net.lan] Naming and addressing in a distributed application on a LAN

orna@sdcsma.UUCP (Orna Berry) (08/16/86)

I am looking for papers discussing naming and assressing in distributed
applications.

Specifically, we design a message passing distributed application with
two kinds of messages: broadcast or group addressed, and acknowledged
(point-to-point) messages.
The ISO protocols support allow for the group addressed messages
to pass from the Application Layer directly to the LLC (Link Layer), while
the point-to-point messages go through the 7 Layers of OSI protocols.
The groups may change dynamically.

I am interested in the set of primitives that the Application Layer should
provide the Distributed Application Programs, and that depends on the
naming and addressing policy that we shall take.

Thus, I am seeking theoretical and practical papers, as well as other
references and suggetions.

Thanks, Orna
