[net.lan] transceivers eating preamble?

In looking over the specs for various makes of Ethernet transceivers, I
occasionally come across something like:

	preamble loss (transmit): < 2 bits + 1 damaged
	preamble loss (receive): < 5 bits + 1 damaged

Some makes of trasceivers don't indicate any preamble loss on their spec
sheets.

Is this normal and expected behavior?  Should I look for anything
specific?
