[net.lan] what could you use a campus network for?

peteri@elecvax.eecs.unsw.oz (Peter Ivanov) (09/07/86)

This may not be the right place to pose this question, but here goes.
Our University is considering the installation of a campus wide data
communications network. The push for this network is coming mainly from
the computer literate types in math, engineering and science.
I am on the network committee and I have one thing standing in the
way of whole heartedly approving the concept. When ever I ask
Why do we need it? (in these hard financial times there are other
things to spend money on) I dont get any good answers. Most things can be
done with our present ad hoc arrangement of hardware. It may not be as fast
or as general, but its possible to connect terminal A to machine X,
to transfer data between (willing) machines etc.
What I need are some examples from other Universities and Colleges of how
a campus wide network can benefit everyone on the campus, including the
drama students, librarians, bio chemists etc.

If you know of, or better still use, such a network, and have some time,
please email a small description, with emphasis on uses that a computer
scientist may not think of at first.
If you have some written or published material, a reference,
or hard copy to the snail mail address below, would be appreciated.

Thanks, peteri
