[net.auto] small is good enough

I really don't want to turn this into an import vs. American built
debate on absolute cruising speed, but I must agree with a recent submission
from utcstat. The fellow with the X with 6 may be passing imports
at 75mph, but the fellows with the imports are either staying legal
or trying to save gass.
I have a 1977 Renault R5L with 782cc motor. (Yes, thats right, smaller
engine than a lot of motorcycles, but looks like a Le Car).
The motor is built to be CHEAP - read is not built for efficiency or power.
I get about 39 mpg (assuming US gallons) in real driving (mostly
highway criuse) - nothing to be ashamed of.
I can cruise at 75 (or more). Things get a bit noisy, and I do get
front end lift around 130 kph (80 mph), but these are not power
limitations. (What do you expect for what is probably the cheapest
European car available in North America).
I admit that I am only de-smogged to 1975 US regs.
The point is though, there is no need for a large engine
(unless you live in a mountainous area).
The reason you are passing the 4 bangers is not the power of your 6.
They, as I said, are probably trying to stay legal.
p.s. I have a friend with an R17 Gordini and dual radar detectors.
1600 cc 4 banger. Does not cruise smoothly below 130kph!
Large engines definitely not needed!
