Hah! Another good defense for your hard disk. I believe there's an INIT available which adds the Appleshare desktop management code to your Mac (if I remember right, the "Oscar" program includes this). Install that on your hard disk in the System folder, blow away the old Desktop file with ResEdit/Disktop/et al, and there you are. As Brian puts it, there's nowhere for WDEF to live. Does Apple support using the Desktop Manager INIT on a non-Appleshare Mac? --- Joe M.
