In general, an overheating catalytic converter is caused by
a too-rich fuel mixture. The excessive heat is generated by
the consumption of the resulting excessive hydrocarbons. Such
a condition is usually caused by improper or insufficient
maintenance (e.g., an automatic choke that does not return to
normal mixture properly), and can happen to ANY car with a
catalytic converter.
