[net.auto] Porsche 944 info request

Although some of the cars mentioned could be purchased
for about 1/3 of $15,000 to $20,000, as stated in the original article,
the Cobras are quite a bit more. Shelby Cobras (Mustang-bodied, basically)
tend to run from 7,000 to 15,000 dollars, with the 1966 and older
models being the highest.
AC Cobras are an entirely different story, however, and are priced
in the stratosphere. Around $25,000 to $35,000 for a 289, and
$45000 and up for nice 427's.
Of course, for that price you get a car that will blow the doors
off of almost anything that's street legal. (0 to 60 in under 5 seconds,
165 mph off of the showroom floor)
Carrol Shelby had twin turbos added to his personal 427 AC,
and was once clocked at 90 mph in the Nevada desert,
by a patrolman who was trying to chase him, and was already
going 140 mph ( for a grand total of 230 mph! )
Too bad I wasn't old enough (or had enough money) to buy one in
the late 60's when they could be had for $5,000 or less.

While responding to a request for Porsche 944 info,
markm suggested several other alternative automobiles. One was the
Shelby Cobra. He suggested that you could get this car for less
than the $15,000 to $20,000 that a used 911 costs.

I've got bad news: a Shelby Cobra, in good shape, is going for more
than $75,000. In mint shape it costs $250,000. If you can find one
that is a complete wreck, it will cost you $25,000 and up. If
anyone knows a cheaper way to get one, LET ME KNOW.
