[net.auto] Not a question of need...

pedalman (10/08/82)

The issue of passive restraints is not a question of need for safety devices
(read seat belts), but is a question of user responsibility. To liken the
issue of passive restraints to electrical safety standards and food
purity is to neglect the responsibility of the user. While no sane person would
argue that pood purity standards should be reduced, all realize that the
grocer cannot be responsible for the consequences if you , the user, neglect
to refridgerate your meat and later succumb to food poisoning. Likewise,
the auto manufacturer cannot be held responsible for you driving on bald tires,
causing you to loose control on a wet street. If the manufacturer is not
responsible in this case, then why should he be responsibile for the
equally stupid act of people not using the currently provided, and adequate,
and cost effective seat belts?
