This may be true; I don't know.  I suspect that if you are reasonably
religious about keeping fresh oil in the engine and keeping the coolant
topped up, etc. that 20 or 30 degrees of water temperature isn't going
to keep the valves that much cooler.  Also, putting a cooler thermostat
in the engine will usually reduce the mileage a little (something about
thermal efficiency, I believe).  I used to run a 165 degree thermostat
in my Triumph GT6 during hot weather (Kansas City summers can be warm)
to keep it from overheating in traffic, and change to a 180 or 190
when cold weather came around, but this was just to keep it running a
little smoother.
