Well, I finally had my 320i tuned up, as part of the standard 30,000 mile "checkup". Someone had earlier mentioned that they had their "Lambda sensor" (also known as the "Oxygen sensor") replaced, and that made their problem go away. Well, what they didn't say is that this sensor costs $200. And my performance is, frankly, not much better than before. It doesn't nearly die when I hit the gas in 2nd when the engine is cold, but it still doesn't have the power it did when it was new. Could it be that my mechanics are just incompetant?
