I've just started using FPROT in order to determine what I want to
use as virus-protection: Scan/McAfee products or FPROT.

I've not used FPROT enough to give you an "experienced" comparison,
but there is one major plus in FPROT's favor: F-DRIVER.SYS

I like the "security" that both VSHIELD and F-DRIVER provide against
know viruses. However, VSHIELD slows the system down (at least mine --
an XT clone) a considerable amount. I'm tempted to CTRL-BREAK out of
it before gets loaded. Since F-DRIVER is loaded in CONFIG.SYS, I can't
do that now. :) Furthermore, programs seem to load faster using
F-DRIVER. (The problem with VSHIELD's speed probably was related to
me using the /SWAP switch.)

Still, both are quality products.....

I use both F-PROT and the McAfee suite.

I used John McAfee's virus s/w for a while before F-PROT. Up till then
I had found nothing to beat it.

Fridrik Skulason's F-PROT is fantastic. But it has some problems.

I use F-DRIVER.SYS as I find it quicker on my XT than VSHIELD
(although VSHIELD has the added protection of refusing to warm boot
off an infected floppy).

However SCAN is better than F-FCHK, as it is much faster. [Note I do
NOT know which scans for more viruses]

I use F-DISINF to disinfect Boot Sector Viruses...it's faster than clean
generally...but I use CLEAN to cleanup file viruses.

I also use F-LOCK and F-POPUP to protect against unknown viruses and
trojans [as they look out for funny stuff like direct writes to disk,
and deleting locked com/exe files..etc.]. I have found a small problem
with these unde DESQVIEW v2.3 in that when you tell it shut off for the
duration of the running program, they sometimes do just that...or they
sometimes shut off for as long as I keep the DOS window open under DV.
As I say...a small problem, as if I did suspect something I wouldn't
test it Desqview in the first place...and I usually do test EVERYTHING I
d/l v. thoroughly before running.

cheers, Andy!
